The opening game of the season saw Stalybridge Celtic u11s take on Elite FC Blacks at Astley Sports Village

We know Elite well, they have a fine group of players but man for man we have just as much quality in our squad and for the opening 20 minutes it showed. Both teams probing each other's defence and getting the ball wide  with Corey seeing a good deal of the ball and was linking well with Mason up top. Devon was called into action a couple of times with a couple of sharp saves and Colts put in a couple of his trademark tackles  to let Elite know he was up for it and the lads were holding their own until conceding a sloppy goal at the back.

Immediately it changed the whole match- it was like our lads had never played with each other before- we were suddenly panicking and hitting first time balls and flicks whereas we were previously taking a touch and looking up. Everything was rushed and as a result possession was conceded repeatedly and Elite capitalised as we know they can.

In truth it was a tough first game of the season but there is hope for the coaches as they can influence how our lads play even if we fall behind. We saw second half how they could manage to put a shot awayon target three or four times.

All the lads put a shift in today with notable performances from Devon (Man of the Match) with at least six fantastic stops; Billy, who was immense  at the back and Colts who takes his Captains role extremely seriously and led by example with some great timed tackles.

Team: Colton (C) Jack (GK) Devon (GK) Billy, Elliot ( seriously Billy Elliot?) Jody, Joe, Finlay, Corey, Zak, Charlie, Mason, George, Will, Harlee Man of the Match: Devon
